The Role
Reporting directly to the President of Wheelabrator, with a dotted-line to the VP of Field HR Operations for WM, as Area HR Manager, you will lead, support, plan and direct all of the people and HR business functions, both international and domestic, for Wheelabrator Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of WM. You’ll directly oversee a team of HR Managers, an Occupation Health Nurse Supervisor and an Executive Assistant, and be responsible for field HR work for approximately five plants located in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In addition to your fieldwork in New England, you will also play a key role in developing and coaching the team in China and an HR Manger in the UK. You’ll serve as a true generalist, handling everything from employee relations and compensation issues, to counseling and mentoring the staff at each of the locations.This is a high-profile leadership role, where you will also sit on the Wheelabrator Senior Leadership team. You will leverage your expertise in HR and employee relations to meet high-level goals and implement company-wide policies and procedures at the local level.
More specifically, you will:
- Participate in the development of the corporation's plans and programs as a strategic partner but particularly from the perspective of the impact on people. Translate the strategic and tactical business plans into HR strategic and operational plans.
- Evaluate and advise on the impact of long range planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory action as those items impact the attraction, motivation, development and retention of the people resources of the corporation.

Develop, support and implement progressive and proactive programs including:
- Compensation and benefits programs.
- Planning models for competencies, talent management and succession planning.
- General business development programs to enhance employee knowledge and understanding of the business of the company and the waste and energy industries.
- Employee relations, affirmative action, sexual harassment, employee complaints, external education and career development and performance management programs.
- Oversee the HRIS database and necessary reports for critical analyses of the HR function and the people resources of the corporation.
- Provide technical advice, knowledge, coaching and guidance to others within the HR discipline.
- Collaborate with the Legal department on all legal/compliance issues.
- Continually challenge and improve the programs, policies, practices and processes associated with meeting the strategic and operational people issues of the organization. Evaluate the HR division structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as provide individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) for individuals.

In addition to your strong HR knowledge and technical skill, to excel in this role you’ll also need to be excellent at building and maintaining professional relationships with staff across all levels of the organization. This is a role where you’ll interact with everyone from the President and Senior Leaders to the Plant Managers, Office Managers, Supervisors and other team members in the field and at the plants across the organization. We’re looking for someone who is confident, accountable, highly ethical and ready to drive the HR function across these sites.This is a global role and compliance is a significant component. We understand there will be a learning curve, but we’ll expect you to have the ability to quickly get up to speed on international and domestic compliance issues that are unique to our industry.
